Top 5 Children's Birthday Party Tips

Most parents celebrate their children's birthdays with a party. From small family parties to elaborate celebrations, birthday parties can be lots of fun for everyone. They can be just as much fun to plan. Here are some tips for making your child's next birthday party the best one so far.

Let the Child Call Some of the Shots

Of course, kids love eating cake and opening presents, but many of them enjoy planning the event too. Unless you're planning a surprise party, you can ask your child to help select the theme, the party decorations, the invitations, the cake and the activities. It'll make the party a truly special event.

Keep the Guest List Manageable

If you're holding the party in your home, it's a good idea NOT to invite your child's entire 2nd grade class. Other venues can handle such a crowd, but for a home party you might want to stick to inviting family and/or some of the child's closest friends from school.

Plan Activities

It's a fact of life that kids get bored easily. Plan activities for the kids to keep them occupied, and remember to set a pick-up time for parents if kids are being dropped off for the birthday party. We're a big fan of games, and you can find a ton of helpful game ideas at MomsWhoThink.com.

Have a Back-Up Plan

If you're planning an outdoor party, it's especially important to have a Plan B for the day's events. Activity books and indoor games will be a must. You might also want to plan a few more activities that you think you'll get to. It's better to have planned activities you don't get to than to discover your games all ended more quickly than you anticipated and you're struggling to fill the leftover time.

Don't Let Hurricane Sandy Ruin Your Halloween Party, Our Party Checklist Will Keep You on Track

To contact us Click HERE
It never hurts to be prepared, when hosting a Halloween or any event and based on the weather forecast for the Northeast it is time to have a Halloween Party Plan Checklist in case the weather turns frightful..

With Hurricane Sandy and a strong cold front, the Halloween weather forecast looks downright scary for Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and maybe even Halloween!

With that being noted, if you live in the Northeast and have outdoor Halloween events and activities planned, you need to be prepared with alternative Halloween games and party activities.

Halloween Party Bad Weather Checklist
1. If you need to move activities inside, is there room for everyone?
While not everyone can fit in 1 room, consider multiple areas and determine whether your garage or basement could work to handle overflow. Garages often provide space, but if you plan on using it, now is the time to plan a Saturday clean up.

If you still don't have enough space, then consider a location back up plan. Talk over options with friends and be ready to take action and announce changes so that everyone gets notified via text or phone call hours in advance of your event. While it is not recommended for children's parties, last minute changes tend to be ok for teenager Halloween parties.

2. Should You Change the Date of your Halloween Event?
If the weather turns really nasty where power outages are reported in your area and / or guests may be in danger due to flash floods then you need to consider cancelling or postponing moving your Halloween party. There is no reason to put guests in danger.

3. Prepare Decorations, Party Supplies & Food
Since weather can be hit or miss (ie if #HurricaneSandy heads out to the Atlantic rather than towards land) and storm paths can often change course, place and box decorations, party supplies and food so it is ready to go outside if the weather is good or inside if bad. Basically, you want everything together and organized so you can quickly set up indoors or outdoors if needed.

4. Clean!
Yep, when you thought everyone would be outside there was no concern over cleaning the house. However with a small army of zombies, witches and superheros in your house, it is time to get prepared and dust, vacuum and sweep. Also it is does rain, make sure you have one or more door mats ready to make the sure the water and mud from outside doesn't end up tracked all over your house.

5. Halloween Activities and Party Games, What Now?
If you were planning a Pumpkin Hunt, Halloween Scavenger Hunt or outdoor game, can you move it inside? And do you have the room to play it? You'll have to be creative to come up with teen Halloween games, but for younger kids you can often adapt outdoor Halloween games indoor or replace them with printable games  and simple challenges. Check out our Halloween games list by age to see what options might work. The key is not to panic but to review ideas today, so that you aren't caught off guard if bad weather hits.

Right now the forecast is for Hurricane Sandy and this cold front to cause problems from Sunday through Wednesday with wind, high surge and rain. Many people love Halloween and the parties that go with the holiday, but remember safety first. To all my friends in the Northeast stay dry, safe and warm.

Hidden Danger of The Doughnut Tree Game, What Parade's Pippa Middleton Article Didn't Tell You

To contact us Click HERE
I enjoy getting the Sunday paper. It's such a great way to start the day, relax with coffee, clip coupons or check out sales and plan out my week, but today the cover of Parade caught my eye and not in a good way. When they had a wonderful picture of Pippa Middleton and a child playing the game doughnuts on a string or as they call it "The Doughnut Tree". See pics below:

Just seeing the picture, reminded my of an email I received many years ago warning about the chocking hazard of the game "Doughnuts on a String" as children race to be the first person to finish a doughnut.

Email noted that the angle of the head and race to consume  doughnut as fast as possible is a dangerous combination that increases the risk of choking.

While I am not a fan of the Doughnut Tree game, I don't mind that they list how to play "The Doughnut Tree" game in the magazine.

The Problem I have with it is:
They FAILED to Mention or even warn they this could be a CHOKING HAZARD!

While this game has been played at many parties over the years without any problems, it is one game that does have a history of causing choking. My concern is that many Parade readers will see this and think, "What a fun idea, let's do this game for Halloween," without being aware of the danger.

At the least Parade should have included a warning for the The Doughnut Tree like; "Not recommend for children under 5 years old as the game may present a choking hazard. Parent / Adult supervision required."

And since they didn't I just did.

After years of writing and creating party games for kids, it is never a good thing to mix young children like the one shown in the picture in a game situation where you may be encouraged to eat food at a strange angle as fast as he or she can to win a contest. Just eating a doughnut with your hands is hard enough, why make it a race that just increases the risk of choking.

At Party Game Ideas, we know party games can be a challenge and risks are involved however we try to place a warning or note concerns to the games so the user can decide whether the party game might be right for them.

While I do give Parade Magazine a Thumbs Up for the Pippa Middleton interview, they get a Thumbs Down for not properly informing their audience of the Real Dangers of the Doughnut Tree game.

If you are still looking for Halloween games for kids, teens and adults Party Game Ideas invites you to check out over 80 different Halloween game ideas for you sorted by age groups. So you can select just the right party game for your Halloween events.

3 diy ornaments

To contact us Click HERE

This was a guest post last year---and i just found it.. (have i mentioned that my draft box is in need of a cleaning) anyways..i thought i had better post it before christmas is over and I have to wait ANOTHER year.

and i found some plastic ornaments on a cheap sale....
and turned them into something fun!

the first one:

I found an image of a manger scene i liked and shrunk it down on my word document...

and printed it out....i took my ornament and kinda traced around it...

and cut it out..

I rolled it up and stuck it inside...

and added a little straw....

you could put in a family picture or a quote or anything that tickles your fancy..source
next up:
I got all these beads at walmart ($1.50 a piece.)
and funnelled them in...(at this time i was thinking that it would be cool to layer these like sand art..)

but i shook them all up instead...
and raided my kids stash for little things (they have those ornaments that separate into halves...so if you want specific christmas items than i would use those so they fit)
tossed those in...

hot glued the top on (a must unless you want beads all over) and added some ribbon...

i'm probably going to make a tag to put on here telling what you are looking for!

and last but not least:
my favorite christmas song is away in a manger....and just because it's my favorite...doesn't mean i know the words.i knew the first verse.pathetic.
so i googled it...
and took a silver sharpie and just started writing...all the way around. i got through the whole song and had just a little space on the bottom.

it's totally pretty...but totally hard to take a picture of...

and that's all...three cute personalized ornaments!

lace (almost entitled don't you know you aren't supposed to wear white after labor day?)

I've been working with wholeport....
they basically send me a package of goodies...and i make crap out of it.win win.
this first package i got piles of beautiful lace!i have been on a lace kick so i was beyond excited!
random side note: my bff in high school was lacey. which really makes me have to think about the spelling....i always want to write it with an e....

i took this white lace...and went and bought a flat sheet from walmart (it's about $5...and it's quite a bit of fabric!)

then i just laid it out and cut a rectangle of lace and fabric and
I actually doubled up the sheet (and made the folded over the bottom part of the skirt so i didn't even hem it! and sewed up the back seam
and added elastic...(just fit to your waist before sewing it on)

i left the bottom so the lace overhung the underneath...

dang you picmonkey..you get us all hooked...then BaBAM. charge.
i love it paired with a belt..

and i (of course) had to make matching ones for the girls! i love having coordinating outfits! (we are wearing them to church on sunday..i'll have to snap  a picture so you can see us all matchy matchy!

I saw this one at target...loved it!
i mean look how different it looks with a different color behind the lace... (gray)
and this one is just against my blue wall (love this one!)

I also got these
remember that slip extender...these would be PERFECT for this! you could sew them right to the bottom of any skirts that need a little length!

and here's some more great lace inspiration!
