This time of year, planning birthday party activities can be a challenge. You want the kids to burn of some energy—after all, you will be feeding them cake—but on days when the weather is extreme, you need to find a way for them to get that energy out indoors.

We have a few solutions for you! The first thing you need is a wide open space. Clear a space of toys and hazards in your basement, play room or rec room. If you don't have the luxury of a designated play space, clear out your family room or living area. Slide furniture to the outer perimeter of the room, and remove items that are potentially breakable.

Best Active Party Games

Duck, Duck, Goose: We've all played this one before. Have the kids sit and a circle on a carpeted floor or area with a large mat. One child is "it" and he goes around tapping each child on the shoulder saying "duck"until he comes to the next child he wants to be "it." When he taps that child's should he shouts "goose!" and the chase begins. The first child to make it back to the open seat, sits down and the child left stand repeats "duck, duck, goose!"

Big Foot Race: This relay race can be a lot of fun. Seal shoebox lids to the box itself and then cut a hole in the top for the kids' feet. Then have them complete a lap and switch off with the next person on their team. If you don't have enough shoeboxes to go around, ask parents to bring one with them to the party. Use the boxes plain, or decorate them to fit the party theme.

Simon Says: One person gets to be Simon and the rest of the children stand in a line facing Simon. Simon calls out instructions saying, for example, "Simon says quack like a duck." All the kids should follow Simon's instructions. However, if Simon simply calls out, "Quack like a duck," the children should ignore the instructions and stand quietly. If a child gets either of these things wrong, she is out for the rest of the game. The last child left could win a prize or simply be Simon for the next round of play.

Limbo: How low can you go? If you don't have an actual limbo stick, you can use a simple broom handle, and two kids or two adults can lower the bar for each round. Remember, the trick is to go under the broom handle without touching or falling on the floor.
